Building Schools for the Future

Building Of New School Begins On Site

Latest image of work carried out

After many years of planning and delays the building of the new school began on site on 6th JULY 2009.  The first work will be the formation of a new vehicular access from Bexley Road and the establishment of a new pupil/pedestrian entrance and temporary path up to the existing school.  By the time we return from the summer break in September the school will begin to use the new pedestrian entrance and all traffic for the building site will be through the new vehicular entrance.  We will also expect to see foundations for the new blocks to be underway.  The completion date for the new school is March 2011 with occupation from the start of the summer term, 2011.  The school has employed a company to take time lapse photgraphs of the school being built so we will have a record of the whole process.  It is hoped a DVD of the images will be made at the end of the project.

The new school will be a collegiate with three mini colleges offering education to pupils aged 11-16 and a sixth form college for 16-19 year olds. Each college will have 450 pupils. One college will have higher ability pupils who will have a ‘fast track’ curriculum offer. The other two will provide education for pupils of all abilities.

The school will be built on the existing school playing fields and is due to start on site early in 2009. Once completed the existing school will transfer into the new buildings and the current school will be demolished. The playing fields will then be reinstated.

You can see from the plans and images that the school is an innovative design, breaking down what is a large school into smaller units, offering a more intimate and personalised education for pupils. Relationships between pupils and staff will be much closer, with all staff knowing all pupils in each individual college. We expect this to dramatically improve the performance of pupils, through closer monitoring and nurturing of pupils’ progress.

The collegiate will be equipped with state of the art information technology that will allow teaching and learning to be delivered in exciting new ways. All the facilities will be suitable for delivery of education into the 21st century, including many vocational facilities such as construction workshops.

The school is scheduled to open in September 2011 and we expect there to be a high demand for places.

Prior to work starting on the school site, road works on Bexley Road will prepare for a new entrance into the school. These works are scheduled to begin on 19th July 2008 and will be completed over the school vacation
